Project overview
ViaVia is a travel planning platform designed for modern explorers who prefer the journey over the destination. The platform positions itself as a "Travel Operating System" that connects the complexity of European travel – different rail networks, booking systems, languages, and transportation modes—into a unified, visual planning experience. Rather than automating trip planning, ViaVia empowers travelers with intelligent guidance while keeping them in control of their journey.
We partnered with ViaVia to design the web application interface that would serve as the primary platform for trip planning and journey management. The project required creating a design system that could handle complex multi-city European itineraries, real-time updates, collaborative planning features, and visual route mapping while maintaining an intuitive, explorer-friendly user experience.
The web app serves travelers planning European trips with multiple stops, different transportation modes, and the desire for flexibility and discovery during their journey.

We asked for brand design, website design and app design. All of which were delivered not only on time but better we could have imagined.

Challenges
Complexity without overwhelm
European travel involves multiple variables: train schedules across different national rail systems, flight connections, accommodation bookings, local transportation, and experiences. The interface needed to present this complexity in a way that felt manageable rather than overwhelming, allowing users to see connections and gaps without drowning in details.
Visual route representation
Traditional itinerary formats use text lists or calendars that make it difficult to visualize the spatial and temporal flow of a journey. ViaVia's core value proposition – the visual route map – required designing an interface that could show geographic movement, time progression, and booking details simultaneously.
Balancing guidance with control
The platform needed to provide intelligent suggestions and identify potential issues (tight connections, schedule conflicts, better route options) without feeling automated or removing user agency. The design had to make it clear that ViaVia augments decision-making rather than replacing it.

Solution
Unified journey dashboard
We designed a central dashboard that provides a complete journey overview at a glance. The interface shows the visual route map, upcoming segments, booking status, potential issues, and key logistics in a scannable layout. This single-screen approach eliminates the need to navigate between multiple views to understand trip status.
Visual route mapping system
The core innovation is a geographic-temporal visualization that shows the journey as a connected route across Europe. Users see their path through cities with transportation connections, timing, and gaps clearly indicated. This visual approach makes it immediately obvious where connections are tight, where there's extra time, or where route optimization opportunities exist.
Context-aware interface layers
The design uses progressive disclosure to show relevant information based on planning stage. During initial planning, broad route options and city suggestions appear. As trips develop, detailed logistics and booking status become prominent. During travel, real-time alerts and next-step information take priority. This contextual approach prevents information overload.
