Project overview

CeroTrade is a Chilean blockchain-based marketplace platform that democratizes access to International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs) across Latin America. As the first Latin American platform operator accredited by the I-TRACK Foundation, CeroTrade simplifies the commercialization and redemption of renewable energy certificates, acting as an intermediary that safeguards environmental assets during transactions and makes the market accessible to a broader range of participants.

We partnered with CeroTrade to design their web application interface. The project required creating a platform that could handle complex certificate trading workflows, present market data clearly, facilitate transactions between buyers and sellers of renewable energy certificates, and make a relatively new and technical market understandable to users with varying levels of expertise in energy attribute certificates.

The web app serves as the primary marketplace platform where companies purchase I-RECs to demonstrate renewable energy usage, traders list certificates for sale, and all participants track their environmental asset portfolios and transactions.

Challenges

Complex market education requirement

The I-REC market in Latin America is relatively new, with stakeholders not fully understanding how energy attribute certificates work, their value, or their application. The platform needed to facilitate transactions while educating users about certificate types, pricing dynamics, and redemption processes without overwhelming them with technical complexity.

Multi-sided marketplace dynamics

CeroTrade serves distinct user groups with different needs: companies purchasing certificates to offset energy consumption, traders selling certificates from renewable energy projects, and potentially brokers facilitating transactions. The interface needed to accommodate these different workflows and information priorities within a unified platform.

Trust and security communication

As an intermediary handling valuable environmental assets, CeroTrade needed to communicate security, reliability, and proper safeguarding of certificates during transactions. The blockchain infrastructure underlying the platform required explanation without alienating non-technical users.

Market data presentation complexity

Certificate pricing, availability across different renewable energy types (wind, solar, hydro), vintage years, and regional variations create complex market data. The interface needed to present this information in a way that supports informed purchasing decisions without

Simplified marketplace interface

We designed a clean, accessible marketplace interface that presents available I-RECs in a browsable format similar to familiar e-commerce platforms. Certificates are organized by energy type, vintage, location, and pricing, allowing users to filter and compare options without needing deep technical knowledge of energy markets.

Guided user onboarding

The platform includes educational onboarding flows that introduce I-REC concepts, explain how certificates work, guide users through their first purchase or listing, and establish confidence in using the marketplace. This progressive education reduces the knowledge barrier preventing market participation.

Role-based dashboard design

Different user types (buyers, sellers, administrators) receive customized dashboard views showing relevant information and available actions. Buyers see available certificates and their purchase history, sellers manage their certificate inventory and sales, creating focused experiences that reduce interface complexity.

Visual market data presentation

Complex pricing and availability data is presented through clear visualizations including charts showing price trends, availability by energy type, and market activity. These visual representations make market dynamics understandable at a glance rather than requiring interpretation of raw data tables.
