Project overview

PetPlace is an online pet supply retailer serving the Serbian market with a comprehensive range of food, accessories, hygiene products, and equipment for dogs, cats, rodents, birds, fish, and turtles. The business needed complete brand development and an ecommerce platform to establish their online presence and compete in the growing pet supply market.

We partnered with PetPlace to build their brand from the ground up and develop a full-featured ecommerce website. The project encompassed brand identity creation, packaging design for private label products, website design and development on WooCommerce, and the technical challenge of importing and organizing 700+ products across multiple categories and pet types.

The website serves as PetPlace's primary sales channel, requiring robust ecommerce functionality, intuitive navigation across diverse product categories, and a shopping experience that builds confidence with pet owners making purchasing decisions for their animals.

Challenges

Building brand recognition from zero

As a new entrant in the Serbian pet supply market, PetPlace needed a brand identity that would establish immediate credibility with pet owners while differentiating from established competitors. The brand needed to communicate trust, care for animals, and product quality without existing market presence or customer base.

Complex product taxonomy

With 700+ products spanning six different animal categories (dogs, cats, rodents, birds, fish, turtles), each with multiple subcategories (food types, equipment, hygiene, accessories), the information architecture required careful planning. The navigation system needed to help customers find specific products quickly while browsing across animal types and product categories.

Multi-category product presentation

Pet products vary significantly in how they need to be presented—food requires nutritional information and size options, equipment needs dimension specifications, hygiene products require usage instructions. The ecommerce system needed flexible product templates that could accommodate these different requirements while maintaining consistent user experience.

Solution

Distinctive brand identity system

We developed a brand identity that balances warmth and professionalism—communicating care for pets while establishing PetPlace as a reliable retailer. The visual system includes a recognizable logo, color palette that appeals to pet owners, and brand guidelines that extend across packaging, website, and marketing materials.

Animal-first navigation architecture

The website organizes primarily by animal type (dogs, cats, rodents, birds, fish/turtles), recognizing that pet owners typically shop by the animal they own. Within each animal section, products are categorized by type (food, equipment, hygiene, accessories), creating intuitive pathways that match shopping behavior.

Comprehensive product categorization

Each animal category includes detailed subcategories – for example, dog food divides into dry food, wet food, supplements, and treats, while cat hygiene includes litter, litter boxes, and scoops. This granular organization allows customers to navigate directly to specific product types without browsing unrelated items.
